What has to be true before this system can help?
A campus has buildings, paths and boundaries that general-purpose maps may not represent in enough detail. A person also needs a destination and a usable position on that local map before a route can be calculated.
General-purpose maps do not contain the local detail needed to guide people reliably through a complex campus. Fika provides campus-specific walking directions using locally maintained spatial data.
What the system does when the work happens
Fika loads the KU boundary and local path data, accepts a selected destination and browser location, matches the start and destination to nearby graph nodes, computes an A* path and turns the path into walking maneuvers.
The route depends on the local map and the device position available at the time. It provides guidance; it does not guarantee that a physical path or position has not changed.

Navigation remains useful when the map, route graph and maneuver logic can operate close to the user without depending on a general-purpose directions service.
